An Ode To Shepard Smith
Sometimes, when I’m working in the afternoon, I watch Faux News. I have told myself and others that I do this because they provide me with more reliable post fodder than CNN or MSNBC or, God knows, BBC World. Today, though, I watched for Shepard Smith.
Yes, I know, he’s rumored to be gay. Oh, like that’s a first for me? On to my reasoning, though.
So, the cable news today was wall-to-wall coverage of the 5 hour Roger Clemens steroid hearing. Yawn. I was hoping it would be over eventually, and kept flipping back and forth. When the end was nigh and the reporters were milling around in the hallways waiting for press availability, Shep got his panties in a bunch. He didn’t understand, he declared, why Congress was wasting it’s time on this. He’d asked lawyers, and they all agreed that the only thing for which Clemens might be legally on the hook was taking drugs without a prescription! 8 years ago! How many millions did this multi-month investigation cost the American public?! How many MILLIONS did it cost Faux News in revenue from skipped commercials to show it?! Isn’t there real news??
At one point, he pounded his fist into his hand! I was sure spittle was flying! The man was (rightly) worked up into a lather over the fact that Congress was spending all this time interrogating a dude for behavior for which he couldn’t be held criminally liable, and for the destruction of some stupid VHS tapes of football players while there’s a RECESSION! AND A WAR! AND WHAT IS WRONG WITH THESE PEOPLE? Shep didn’t understand and his self-righteous anger got the better of him, veteran serious newsman that he is.
And then his overlords had him interview the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Edition cover model, and WKC Dog Show winner Uno and his handler. He looked hella uncomfortable during the first one, and not in a “can’t go to the chalkboard” kind of way. It was awesome.
