Hillary Does The DNC

Like the rest of the media, I’m completely obsessed with the drama Hillary and that husband of hers brought to this election. I slept through last night’s festivites, but I can’t resist liveblogging Hillary’s big convention speech.

Senator Clinton is due to take the stage at 10:30. Chris Matthews says her speech is going to be “the most important half hour of the summer.” I don’t know about all that. There’s no way Hillary’s not going to commit career suicide and try to run away with the nomination, but her speech should still be sort of interesting. OK, time for me to start mixing pre-game drinks. I’ll see you guys after the jump.

9:26 PM- Can I just say that Obama’s kids were too freakin’ cute last night. Sasha Obama is going to win this election for her dad.

9:40 PM- Mark Warner’s keynote speech is coming up. David Gregory says the message tonight is going to be bipartisan and they’re not going to focus on attacking John McCain. I’m definitely one of those supporters who’d like to see them really go at it. Biden’s good at that sort of thing.

9:44 PM- I’ve had a problem taking Mark Warner seriously ever since I read about him doing a campaign event in Second Life.

9:48 PM- Should switch networks for this thing? I’ve been watching MSNBC since their outdoor stage got swarmed with 9/11 truth protesters this afternoon and so far, Matthews and Olbermann have been consistently hilarious

9:55 PM- “If you can send jobs to Bangalore India you can send jobs to Danville, VA…” etc. Pretty good line. Bob Casey’s punchlines have been the best so far. “That’s not a maverick, that’s a sidekick” was pure gold.

10:00 PM- Warner doesn’t really excite me. I feel like he was doing a variation on Edwards’ “two America’s” schtick. He’s more masculine than the disgraced Senator, which is good, but he’s a way worse orator. Would we be talking about this guy if he wasn’t from a battleground state?

10:22 PM- Apparently Obama’s watching this thing from a convention-watching party with 12-15 other people at some family’s house in Billings, Montana. He basically did the same thing last night too. Am I the only one who thinks this hanging out in the living room stuff is cheesy?

10:28 PM- Either my TV is f’ing up or MSNBC is having some technical difficulties. I’m switching to PBS.

10:31 PM- Good God public broadcasting is a snoozefest, but my TV definitely wasn’t the problem. CNN it is.

10:33 PM- “Petro-dictators.” Ha! Finally! I like this Brian Schweitzer, he was good in the pre-game show too.

10:34 PM- They’re showing the VIP’s in the audience. Michelle Obama is such a MILF. I can’t believe Bill Clinton’s still wearing those ridiculous bracelets.

10:35 PM- Schweitzer’s speech was great. A lot of energy, a lot of humor, and he aggressively attacked the Republicans. This is the type of stuff we need to get those NASCAR voters. Shoot, maybe the college kids will actually show up if a few more people actually manage to be exciting.

10:37 PM- Ooh it’s the Hillary Clinton video tribute! It’s set to Lenny Kravitz!

10:40 PM- Nice subtle 9/11 reference with the NYPD and FDNY shots there.

10:41 PM- Alright Hillary, that was a very nice video. Are you feeling better? Can we please get back to saving America now?

10:44 PM- I’m so glad we didn’t have to deal with Chelsea for more than a second there. She really irks me. I like Hillary’s bright orange pantsuit, she definitely could use more vibrant colors like that to seem a little less dour. Maybe if she’d busted out the neon sooner she’d have been the nominee.

10:47 PM- “I am here… as a proud supporter of Barack Obama.” Show’s over folks. “The time is now to unite and move along as a single party with a single purpose. We are on the same team and none of us can afford to sit on the sidelines.” Move along, nothing to see here.

10:47 PM- Thanks Hillary.

10:48 PM- “Barack Obama is my candidate and he must be our President.

10:49 PM- Michelle Obama looks so intent. I hear she’s the one who did a lot of the legwork to make sure the Clintons were onboard.

10:51 PM- “To my Sisterhood of the Traveling Pantsuits…” She’s had some great jokes in here, I just wish more of the punchlines were aimed at McCain.

10:53 PM- Notice how they have Bill Clinton sitting next to a black guy. Looks like subtle damage control to me.

10:54 PM- Blaming the record deficit on “Money borrowed from the Chinese to buy oil from the Saudis.” Nice.

10:58 PM- Had to quote Nojo’s great comment up here: “This would have sounded great the night of the final primary…” Nail, meet head.

11:00 PM- And we don’t like McCain because of what again? I understand that they’re trying to be positive and take the high road, but I think we really need to focus on just how evil the enemy is. Especially to help with the party unity problems.

11:02 PM- OK, now she’s getting into it. John McCain = “More war and less diplomacy.” I like that. Also liked when she got all sarcastic about him and brought up equal pay to show why he’s no good for her middle-aged white ladies.

11:06 PM- Hillary might be one of those politicians like Al Gore who finds their zone only after losing. This may be the best and most energetic speech I’ve ever seen her give.

11:09 PM- Wow. I hate to sound like I’m just dropping all my previous distate for Hillary now that she’s backing Barack, but this was awesome. She killed it.
