Middle Aged Women Still Prefer Oprah to GOP

The boycott of Oprah’s show by a GOP women’s group, over her refusal to interview Sarah Palin, is not having much effect - Oprah’s ratings are up because she is more important than any paltry presidential race.

Apparently, the absurdity of boycotting Oprah for not interviewing Palin, when Palin basically refuses to be interviewed by anyone, has not yet struck the GOP. [Raw Story]

Sailors, Drag Queens, and Drama Queens

I am generally a fan of Frank Rich, despite his occasional (okay, frequent) pretensions. However, his article today, entitled “Memorial Day at ‘South Pacific’” may be his worst work ever. He makes the argument that South Pacific is so tearjerkingly awesome because it makes the viewer think about the costs of war, which we are rarely reminded of by the bumbling buffooneries of our current president:

Watching “South Pacific” now, we’re forced to contemplate Iraq, which we’re otherwise pretty skilled at avoiding. Most of us don’t have family over there. Most of us long ago decided the war was a mistake and tuned out. Most of us have stopped listening to the president who ginned it up. This month, in case you missed it, he told an interviewer that he had made the ultimate sacrifice of giving up golf for the war’s duration because ‘I don’t want some mom whose son may have recently died to see the commander in chief playing golf.’

Why I’m Sick of Watching the Olympic Protests

Like the rest of you, I’m watching the wall-to-wall coverage of the Olympic torch winding it’s way through San Francisco on CNN right now. The thing is, it’s really pissing me off. Of course, I’m happy to see people protesting and being politically active and all that good stuff, but the fact that the media is covering these demonstrations so thoroughly is beyond obnoxious. I’ve been to many massive anti-war/anti-Bush events, and these same news organizations largely ignore the protests against our government. China has it’s dirty laundry, but so do we. Do any of you remember Wolf Blitzer, or anybody else, spending hours covering the various Iraq War anniversary marches this past February? I didn’t think so. I’m not saying people shouldn’t be out there raising hell. By all means, rock on. It’s just nauseating to see how eagerly the media jumps on activism when it confronts other countries in light of the poor job they’ve done covering the vehement opposition to the Bush Administration for the past seven years. I call bullshit.
